Diane and Paddy to ‘Slide on’

Diane Greer and Paddy Nash have signed up.

Diane Greer and Paddy Nash have signed up.

They’re better known for their vocals and catchy music but Paddy Nash and Diane Greer are hanging up their guitar and kazoo to slide down Shipquay Street next month.

The well-known pair, who sing with their band ‘Paddy Nash and the Happy Enchiladas’, have already registered to take part in ‘Slide On’, in aid of Cancer research UK.

The event, which will see almost 2000 people slide down a custom-made water slide, takes place on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September

Explaining why they’re taking part Diane said: “I have been involved in Derry Well Women for many years and we have a wonderful Cancer Support Group there who have helped to shape the services we have today.

“Cancer doesn’t discriminate, it touches many of us, and research is imperative in the fight against it.

“It’s also the idea of our good friend Sharon Arbuckle, the Local Fundraising Manager, so I’m not sure we had a choice!”

Paddy continued: “It’s raising money for a great cause and who in their right mind would turn down a chance to slide down Shipquay Street on a water-slide?

“Here’s my question to everyone else - ‘why are you not doing it?’”

When asked what they might be wearing on the day Diane said, “It’s a no brainer - my duffle coat!”

Paddy swiftly replied, “Speedos and a snorkel!”

The pair jokingly said, “We’re are a little concerned about the speed we may gather up going down and are suggesting that the residents of Browning Drive might consider leaving their houses for the day just in case we take off and veer to the left!”

If you want to take part the event is open to anyone over the age of 16 (pregnant women are also not permitted) and you can register for £10 at cruk.org/slideoncancer and set to raise a minimum target of £100.

You can also visit the Cancer Research UK information booth which will be positioned in the Richmond Centre Level 3 every Saturday until Saturday 23rd August from 11am-4pm.

Alternatively, potential sliders can enter a text competition which is being run by the ‘Derry Journal’. To win one of 800 places up for grabs you can text DJLSLIDEON to 65550, texts cost £3 and you can enter as many times as you like.
