Friday's Child - Hillary McClintock

This week's Friday's Child is newly elected Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Alderman Hilary McClintock. A member of the Democratic Unionist Party, Hilary lives in Drumahoe. She has been married to Billy for 40 years and they have two daughters and three grandchildren. She was selected by her party to stand for election in 2014 and joined the former Derry City Council representing the Waterside ward. Hilary devotes a lot of her time to the Waterside Presbyterian Church where she is the only female elder and she is also Church Treasurer. She is looking forward to the year and challenge ahead representing the city and district as Mayor.

How would you describe yourself?

Someone who has a quiet inner strength and would try to help anyone I could.

Happiest childhood memory?

Going down to Fahan beach on a summer evening once my father had come home from work.

What was your first job?

Civil Servant in F6 Branch at Lisahally.

Favourite book?

I enjoy a good murder mystery. Something like a Ruth Rendell or a Peter Robinson one and I don’t mean the former First Minister.

Favourite film?

‘Father of the Bride’ with Steve Martin.

Favourite television programme?

I enjoy the house makeover programmes although I would never let them into my house. I also like ‘Homes Under the Hammer’ type programmes.

Favourite expression?

“Do onto others as you would want them to do to you”.

I detest the saying ‘What’s the craic’.

Favourite method of relaxation?

Sitting in the sun reading a good book.

Favourite holiday destination?

Anywhere hot.

Who would you most like to meet?

I’m not really into the whole celebrity scene but it would be interesting to meet someone like Michelle Obama.

What makes you angry?

People who abuse children or the elderly.

What makes you happy?

Spending time with people I care about.

What human quality do you most admire?

Kindness.

What human quality do you least admire?

Spite.

What has been the most embarrassing thing to happen to you?

Laughing at a serious moment when I misheard what someone said to me.

What was the worst thing to happen to you in your life?

Probably the loss of people close to me.

What is your greatest fear?

I don’t like seeing blood. Particularly my own.

What has been the high point of your life to date?

There have been so many personal high points but the most recent has of course been the opportunity to become Mayor of this great city and district.

How would you like to be remembered?

Someone who lived her life.

What is your most treasured possession?

Probably my iPad because of all the photographs and information on it.

If you won the Lotto what would you do with it?

I don’t do the Lotto so that’s not going to happen.

If you could be granted one wish in life, what would you ask for?

Continued good health.

If you could write your own epitaph what would it be?

She fought the good fight, she has finished the race and she has kept the faith.
