This is the Derry cancer survivor who’s set to embark on a mammoth sailing expedition around Ireland in memory of his late friend.
Darren Robb from Coshquin will set sail with his trusty companion Toby the dog in June.
Although the exact location and date are yet to be fixed depending on weather conditions, Darren says he is determined to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Care.
“This is my boat, the Stoney B,” he said. “I had a bit of cancer myself in 2011 and had 32 sessions of radiation treatment to have a tumour removed.
“It was an ordeal to say the least. The radiation treatment leaves you feeling very weak and tired.
For me it was like getting hit with a mallet.
“But I am doing well now and feeling the best I ever have.
Although he has had his boat for five years Darren admits that his experience is limited.
“I will be treading every carefully and won’t be taking any chances,” he said.
“I wanted to do this to remember my good friend John Stewart. I met John in the City Hospital in Belfast when we were getting treatment together.
“Unfortunately his cancer came back and they couldn’t help him in the end. But he was a fine big man.”
Darren’s plan is to set off in June.
“We could go clockwise or anticlockwise we will have to wait and see,” he said. “I am asking people ask people to donate and raise awareness for Macmillan which helps so many people battling cancer, an illness that destroys lives.”
Maria Small, Macmillan Fundraising Manager said: “Macmillan NI is absolutely delighted to be supporting Darren with this charity Sail around Ireland.
“Darren has experienced first hand the support that Macmillan gives to people affected by cancer and their families and wants to help other people have access to our much needed services.
“This sail will be a real challenge for Darren who wants to raise as much money as possible for local Macmillan services. All of the money Darren raises will be spent on our Macmillan services based at Altnagelvin Hospital. I would urge everyone to get behind Darren and support his courageous sail-by donating on his justgiving page, joining him on a leg of his voyage or supporting the various events he is planning.
