Prestige medal plaques for sale

A Derry man who is set to run the New York marathon in November has come up with a unique fundraising idea to help support the Foyle Hospice.

Sean McIvor who runs U-Turn Running and Fitness alongside Danny Glenn, has designed the ‘Derry Prestige Medal Plaque’ featuring the city’s Hands Across the Divide statues.

With the tagline ‘Everyone’s a Winner’ and ‘Supporting the Foyle Hospice’ the medal plaques are made of the highest quality 2.5 mm mild steel and coated in a top quality powdercoated finish.

Initially Sean made 100 of the plaques however they have proved so popular he’s planning to manufacture a second batch.

“I’ve been doing my fundraising for the New York marathon and the idea about the medal plaques was going round in my head,” Sean told the ‘Journal’.

“I knew that I wanted the image on the plaque to be an iconic one of Derry so when we sat down to do the design we went with the hand across the divide scene.”

Sean, who works as an engineer as his day job, said that all the profits from the plaques will go directly to the Foyle Hospice, a charity close to his heart, and one he has supported on his many runs throughout the past three years.

“My father was cared for the by the Foyle Hospice so this is a charity that’s really important to me,” he said.

To date the Derry man has run seven marathons, and is set for his eighth on June 5 when he runs in the Walled City event.

And to Sean there’s nothing quite like running around your home town with team mates and so many people shouting your name in support.

The next one on the calendar is the New York marathon, but Sean says - you never know, he might decided to do another one between now and then.

The plaques are being sold on facebook however Sean says he plans to have a stall at the race pack collection points for the Walled City Marathon where they will be on sale.

But Sean stresses that the medal plaques are not only aimed at runners.

“I’d like to see them bought by runners and people who do all different sorts of sports,” he said.

“Already I’ve sold 14 plaques to a karate club and we’ve had some interest from football teams and gymnasts.”
