One of the most iconic shapes on the Cityside skyline is about to disappear from view.
Earlier this week heavy plant machinery rolled onto the site of the former St Peter’s High School, and in the near future the building, which has been responsible for educating thousands of young men, will finally be raized to the ground.
For some it will mark the end of an era, but for others, particularly those in the Creggan living close to the old school, there will be relief, as the site has been the target for a series of arson attacks, vandalism and anti-social behaviour since it became vacant.
As a result, the school had fallen into disrepair since it closed last year.
Councillor Kevin Campbell said: “It is fantastic news for the community, especially for the residents living near the school.
“It has been a magnet for anti-social behaviour and there have been two major fires on site as well.
“It may take up to 12 weeks before the whole site will be cleared,” he said.
