A Derry charity worker has urged local people to take extra steps to watch out for their elderly neighbours over the festive period.
Eilish O’Doherty of Age Concern said Christmas can prove to be “exceptionally lonely” for older members of our community who may live alone.
“Certainly this is one time of the year when people can feel isolated, especially if they have suffered a bereavement during the year or have no family living close by.
“We would ask people to take the time out of their day just to check in on their neighbours.
“It may be just a case of knocking on the door and checking they are fine.
“Elderly people are often proud and may not ask for help - but saying hello can make a huge difference.”
