When Banagher boxer Eamonn O’Kane steps into the ring at one of the most famous venues in the world this weekend, there will be an Irish invasion of fans cheering him on, including his wife, Nicola.

The 33-year-old boxer is in New York for the potentially life changing fight, a world title eliminator against Tureano Johnson in Madison Square Garden where he will attempt to make his own history at the famous venue.

Watching nervously will be 33-year-old Nicola who flew out to New York on Thursday with the couple’s sons, six-year-old Charlie and four-year-old Oscar.

“The boys have no idea what’s happening, really. They were just excited to get on a plane,” said Nicola.

Also among the crowd will be Eamonn’s family, including mum Colleen.

“Eamonn’s mum never goes to the fights, so she’ll be babysitting for us” said Nicola.

Nicola said with family life there isn’t much time to think about the big fight.

“I only get nervous before a fight because usually I’m busy working and, when Eamonn comes home, it’s normal family stuff - work, school and family. He’s my husband and the father of our children at home, so boxing takes a back seat.”

Nicola said she has been in regular contact with Eamonn in recent days, and he’s in good form.

“He has been busy training and he has done all the hard work and preparation. He’s in a good place,” she said.

Nicola added; “We believe he can do it.

“Fingers crossed he’ll come home a champion.”
