First ever Obon on the Foyle event

As part of the Legenderry Maritime Festival the hugely successful ‘Obon on the Foyle’ event was organised for Friday evening.

The Tōrō Nagashi Japanese Lantern Floating ceremony took place as several hundred people turned up to see the event at the Foyle Marina.

Ibuki Taiko and guests provided the music as the group launched lanterns carrying symbolic and sentimental messages onto the river.

Obon is an annual Buddhist event for commemorating one’s ancestors.

It is believed that each year during obon, the ancestors’ spirits return to this world in order to visit their relatives.

This was the first year of the event, which lasted around 25 minutes, and the organisers said, “The Obon on the Foyle Team would like to thank everyone for making it such a brilliant beginning.”
