The move comes after the ‘Journal’ was contacted by a member of the public who said he was disappointed to bring visitors to the square and find the fountains off.
“It got me thinking that it had been a long time since I saw them on,” he said.
“In fact the same people had been to visit Derry this time last year and the same thing happened. We went to Guildhall Square but they weren’t coming on.
“It’s such a shame because the people love them, especially the kids.”
A spokesperson for Derry City and Strabane District Council said: “We can confirm that repair work has begun on the fountains located in Guildhall Square.
“It is expected that the fountains will be back in operation over the coming weeks.”
