Free Derry Wall is in danger of descending into something akin to the loyalist Twaddell Avenue camp in North Belfast according to one “lifelong republican and Bogside resident”.

The man, who asked to remain anonymous, was critical of the way in which the green area located beside Free Derry Wall had been used for a wide variety of campaigns in recent months.

“All we need is a caravan in the middle and it will become Derry’s loyalist Twaddell Avenue camp,” said the man.

“There has been an unease in the area for the last couple of months about what has been going on in and around Free Derry Wall and the Hungerstrike Monument.”

He added: “In recent months a number of billboards have appeared, the latest at the weekend and it’s just destroying the look of the whole area.

The man said the way in which billboards are erected in the area should be done in an organised manner and one in which does not impact upon its aesthetics.

“The whole place looks unsightly and the billboards are ghettoising the area. There are about a dozen billboards along the length of Rossville Street so no one can say they can’t get their message out.

“As a republican I am appealing for a bit of common sense and for the billboards to be moved to other locations or replace old or weather beaten ones in the same area.”
