In 2010 Gareth McCay was told he’d never walk again but following a miraculous recovery, the Derry man aims to complete his very own charity triathlon this Friday.

The 29 year-old solicitor plans to raise as much as possible for Spinal Research to say thanks for all the help he received on his road to recovery by completing a 10k arm cycle, a 15k cycle and a 400m walk.

“The walk will be the hardest thing for me, I’ve done the distances in the other two events, now it’s just a matter of putting them together. As for the walk, I’ve only done 200m with my new prosthetic but I’m going to just grit my teeth and get on with it on Friday. I intended to do a swim but it didn’t work out for me, but I’m going to keep trying when I get this event finished.”

Gareth lost his leg after freak accident in his home and was told he had suffered a complete spinal injury and would never walk again.

However, the keen sportsman pushed himself to a miraculous recovery over a period of more than two years. He now has an “almost complete range of movement”.

Gareth will take on the feat of endurance at Templemore Sports Complex at 9.15am on Friday will host a fundraising event in the Tower Hotel later that night to raise further funds.

Tickets Friday night’s fundraiser for Spinal Research - which is to be compered by Michael Doherty, with entertainment provided by singer Claire McCallion and DJ Sid - by are available at the Tower Hotel, admission £7.50. A raffle for a host of great prizes will also be held on the night.
