A rally was held outside Derry’s Guildhall on Friday to highlight discrimination against the gay community in Russia as the country hosts the winter Olympics in Sochi.
The Games have drawn international attention to Russia’s anti-gay legislation and the situation faced by the LGBT community in the country.
Derry Sinn Féin candidate Liam Friel, who took part in the protest, said: “It was important to attend the rally at the Guildhall to highlight Russia’s new law criminalising the gay community and breaches of human rights against the LGBT community as the winter Olympics in Russia opened.
“We must work all year round to change attitudes regarding discrimination against LGBT communities. Everyone has a role to play in ensuring that we make it clear that racist, sectarian and homophobic attacks are not acceptable in any community, be it Derry or Moscow.”
