One of the leading figures behind Derry’s annual Gay Pride Festival has been recognised for her work with a prestigious national award.

Gay rights activist Shá Gillespie was named Volunteer of the Year at the Galas LGBT awards held in Dublin recently.

She is the first woman from the north to take the honour.

Shá said she was both “delighted and honoured” to receive the recognition but said the success of Foyle Pride depended on “the help of a lot of other people who pull out all the stops to make the festival such a success.”
