Halloween party under way in #ScaryDerry

Derry is poised to host its biggest ever festival this weekend, with tens of thousands expected to join the party in the newly crowned Hallowe’en capital of the world.

Hotel occupancy rates for Hallowe’en night have soared to 95 per cent, with last minute bookings still being made yesterday.

Odhran Dunne, general manager at ‘Visit Derry,’ revealed there will be a number of VIP guests in the city for the weekend, including around 30 travel agents from across Canada; international internet bloggers and a team of 25 conference and events experts from Ireland and Britain.

BBC’s flagship evening TV programme ‘The One Show’ will also feature footage of Derry’s Hallowe’en celebrations in tonight’s programme.

Mr. Dunne told the ‘Journal’: “We have had an amazing level of enquiries since the announcement that we are the top Hallowe’en destination in the world in the ‘USA Today’ poll.”

The largest single post-parade and fireworks party on Saturday night will see 1,200 people attending Jika Jika!’s sold-out Halloween D.J. event at ‘The Bunker,’ Ebrington.

James Crossan from Jika Jika! said: “Demand for tickets has gone through the roof. It should be a night to remember.”

The local council, meanwhile, confirmed it is considering inviting ‘USA Today’ representatives to join next year’s celebration.

A council spokesperson added: “This year’s event is expected to attract the biggest crowds to date.”
