Hammer used in '˜barbaric' assault in Dungiven

Police are investigating an assault on a man in Dungiven who was reportedly struck with a hammer.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police are investigating a report of an assault in the Ard Na Smoll area of Dungiven on Monday night, 27 February.

“Shortly before 10.30pm it was reported that a man, aged in his 40’s, was assaulted. The man sustained an injury to his hand after it was reported he had been struck with a hammer.

“Police are appealing to anyone who has any information about this incident to contact officers in Limavady on 101, quoting reference number 1277 of 27/02/17.

“Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Sinn Fein councillor Sean McGlinchey condemned the attack as “barbaric”.

“This is not representative of Dungiven, and the people of Dungiven don’t want this,” said Colr.McGlinchey, who added: “To attack someone with a hammer is barbaric.”
