Sinn Féin Councillor for the Greater Shantallow area, Tony Hassan, has welcomed the news that the Housing Executive is to begin a programme of work to replace solid fuel room heaters and install gas central heating in homes in the Galliagh area . Councillor Hassan said:
“I welcome the news that the Housing Executive is to remove the old solid fuel heating systems and install new gas central heating in 42 homes at Bradley Park, Brookdale Crescent, Cashel Hill and Glencaw Park.
“For a number of years I have been campaigning on behalf of the residents to secure this work and I am very pleased that the Housing Executive has finally committed to the commencement of this project of work. The estimated start date for the work to begin is March of next year.” He added: “This work, which is part of the Retrofit Scheme which will also upgrade the roof space insulation to the N.I.H.E. standard will be welcomed by all residents in the affected areas.
“However I am very disappointed that the bungalows in Cashel Hill and Glencaw Park which have Economy 7 heating have not been included in this scheme. I believe that Economy 7 is the worst type of home heating there is and Sinn Féin has been calling for years to have it replaced by other types of heating. Again I am calling on the Housing Executive to do away with it soon as possible.”
