People living in the Glen area were treated to complimentary therapies this week during a special event designed to promote the importance of good mental health.

The Winter Wellness Event, which was held at the Glen Development Centre, was organised by the Ballymagroarty and Hazelbank Community Partnership (BHCP).

During the event, nurses offered MOT Health Checks for men and women of all ages.

“The health checks are particularly good for those who can’t get an appointment with their doctor or those who are too afraid to go,” said BHCP Health Development Worker, Roxanne Nixon.

“We had 13 referrals made on the day regarding high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar and the event also detected a local person with one irregular heartbeat,” she added.

After the initial health checks, the participants are then given advice on how to improve both their physical and mental health.

“These type of events are so important as they can help people to improve their general physical and mental health,” said Roxanne.

“It’s all about bringing the services into the heart of the community to a place where people feel comfortable. If we help to improve the health of one person then surely that has to be regarded as a success.”

A healthy lunch was offered to everyone who took part and there was also a talk about the importance of staying warm throughout the winter.
