SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has sponsored a parliamentary motion at Westminster supporting Cervical Screening Awareness Week 2015, which runs from 15 to 21 June and is led by Jo’s (Cervical Cancer) Trust.
Earlier this year Jo’s Trust – the leading UK charity dedicated to supporting women affected by cervical cancer – praised the campaigning efforts of Derry’s ‘Team Sorcha’.
In memory of Sorcha Glenn who passed away on the 24th October 2014, Team Sorcha has been campaigning to raise awareness of cervical cancer in Derry and throughout the North.
Mr Durkan said: “I am delighted to support Cervical Screening Awareness Week, which aims to highlight the importance of cervical screening and how attending a screening appointment can help prevent cervical cancer.
“Over 22 per cent of women still do not attend their cervical screening – and with eight women diagnosed with cervical cancer every day, raising public awareness of screening is critical.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the excellent work of Jo’s Trust and the Team Sorcha campaign in supporting women and their families who are affected by cervical cancer.
“Earlier this year I met Jo’s Trust Chief Executive Rob Music at Westminster, who was encouraged by the pick-up he had received about the Derry campaign and expressed his full admiration for Team Sorcha.”
