A nurse working within the Western Trust has been nominated for an award with the MS Trust.

Multiple Sclerosis Specialist nurse Fiona Mullan was nominated for the award by two of her patients, Cliona Evans and Derry Journal reporter Catherine Doran.

Cliona explains why she nominated Fiona: “I was diagnosed with MS aged 20. I’m now 28. The service is invaluable to people who are diagnosed and eight years down the line Fiona is still very much there for me. She was just lovely and has offered me emotional support as well as practical.

“She’s always so empathetic and if I leave her a voicemail she always gets back to me. Fiona covers a lot of area in Northern Ireland, from my home city Derry-Londonderry to Enniskillen. We’re so lucky to have such a wonderful nurse.

“I truly would be lost without her, she’s an angel!”

Echoing these sentiments Catherine says, “Fiona is the perfect example of a brilliant MS Nurse. No question is too small, and no worry is dismissed. Instead, I feel supported and listened to, especially when going through a difficult relapse.

“Last year I had a particularly hard six months and I honestly don’t know what I would have done without having her to reassure and advise me.

“I cannot praise highly enough the work she does.”

The MS Trust’s ‘My Super Nurse’ award recognises specialist nurses who make a real difference for people with multiple sclerosis.

On hearing of her nomination Fiona said, “I am delighted to have been nominated by my clients. Within my role I aim to provide people with the information they need to empower them to manage their condition independently and where necessary signpost them to other professions or agencies.

“I have developed information and education sessions for recently diagnosed and continually strive to promote good health and independence to those who avail of the service.”

The Western Trust is also supporting the MS Awareness Week, 29th April-5th May by highlighting the remarkable work MS nurses carry out with patients on a daily basis. The Trust is aiming to raise awareness of the disease, symptoms and the support available across the Western Trust area.
