Patients have had to be evacuated after a suspected fire broke out in Altnagelvin Hospital this morning.
A spokeswoman for the Wetsern Trust confirmed that fire-fighters were tasked to the scene, and it is udnerstood the cause is now under investigation.
In a statement the Western Trust has now confirmed: “Smoke was reported coming from a ‘bed pan washer’ in Ward 5 this morning.
“21 patients were safely transferred from the ward and have been resettled elsewhere within the hospital.
“It is envisaged that the ward will return to normal business later today.
“The Western Trust would like to thank its staff and the Emergency Services for their prompt response to the incident.”
Sinn Féin Foyle MLA and Chair of the Assembly’s Health committee Maeve McLaughlin commenting on the incident this morning said:
“I would like to praise the professionalism of the staff on Ward 5 for their swift action in moving patients to another location during this incident. “Thankfully this wasn’t a major fire and its hoped things can return to normal in the hospital as quickly as possible.”
