An experienced nurse and senior manager, Una was previously manager of the Chemotherapy Unit (Sperrin Unit) at Altnagelvin Hospital where she has driven significant improvements in care quality for cancer patients in the Western Trust area.

Speaking on her new appointment, she said: “We have a fantastic team of health professionals, managers and non-clinical staff here in the Western Trust and I am proud to be the one who is able to take up this role.

“My priority will be to make sure the new unit delivers high quality care for our patients. I am looking forward to the new role and know that I will have a good team of people alongside me. The development of the new unit here at Altnagelvin is truly fantastic news for patients both from Northern Ireland and Donegal.”

Western Trust Chief Executive, Elaine Way, says she is delighted with the new appointment.

“Una will bring a wealth of clinical and management experience to her new role as Radiotherapy Manager,” she said. “In addition to her nursing background, she has always demonstrated her dedication to Cancer Services and to our patients. I am delighted that she has accepted the post and look forward to working with her in her new role.”

Una says she has a clear vision for what the radiotherapy unit will look like: “I want to help shape a Radiotherapy Service that will deliver safe and effective care, centred on the individual patient and their unique and individual needs.”

“This unit will have an immense impact on patient experience.

“Currently, patients face lengthy journeys to receive radiotherapy treatment; the new unit will mean that 90% of patients in Northern Ireland will be within an hour’s journey of a radiotherapy unit.

“This will make a huge difference too many patients at a time when disruption in their lives needs to be minimised.”
