HOGAN WILL NOT SAVE A PENNY

Have your say

Buncrana Mayor, Peter McLaughlin claimed yesterday abolishing the town council ‘will save the country nothing - not one penny’

According to the Fine Gael man his party colleague, Environment Minister, Phil Hogan, has got his ‘sums all wrong.’

Colr McLaughlin said: “I know the public might be thinking ‘he would say that, wouldn’t he’ but that is not the case here.

“The facts are simple: two new municipal councillors elected on to Donegal Co. Council will have, based on current figures, the same cost as nine mbers of Buncrana Town Council.

“In addition we have had a massive, costly programme of decentralisation here. None of those staff will be laid off; they will be absorbed back into the council. So there is no saving there either.”

He added that Donegal County Council was ‘almost broke’ after spending so much on decentralisation and that much of that was now about to be thrown away.

And the Buncrana Mayor said if Inishowen and Donegal could be used as a template for the rest of the country then it proved that there would be little savings at all

“What is happening here is that we are not only losing democracy but were also getting nothing in return. That’s not the way to go.

He concluded: “People can vote me out of office any time they like but the issue of local democracy is not about me. The more things are centralised the less power the citizens of this area will have.
