The security alert in Derry’s Foyle Road was last night declared a hoax.
Earlier traffic was diverted away from the area after the discovery of a suspicious object.
The alert ended at around 6:30pm.
SDLP Foyle MLA, Colum Eastwood, said the alert “ once more caused unwanted and unneeded disruption.”
“The consequence of this alert is on vulnerable residents who have been evacuated, on businesses who are attempting to trade in difficult financial circumstances and on children trying to get home from school.
“Perhaps those responsible would have the courage to come forward to explain the reasoning behind these futile consequences.
“I would urge anyone with information about this alert to pass it on to the police,” he said.
