Several homes were evacuated in Derry last night following a security alert in Charlotte Street.

Police say the alert began at 12.25am and ended around 3am.

The incident took place whilst a controversial bonfire was lit in the Bogside.

The bonfire was attended by a crowd estimated to have been over 1,000. In the midst of the security alert a police helicopter flew over the area and two PSNI landrovers equipped with searchlights positioned themselves at the top of the flyover.

The PSNI say that more details on the security alert will be reached this morning.
