The ‘Humdinger! Children’s Book Festival’ will continue until tomorrow.
The amazingly-talented author and illustrator, Oliver Jeffers has headlined a series of family-friendly events, designed to inspire a love of reading and spark the imagination.
Children will have the chance to meet their favourite authors and illustrators and take part in a range of interactive workshops and events.
Humdinger! Children’s Book Festival! is presented by local children’s media company Dog Ears.
Fionnuala Deane, Managing Director, said: “We were delighted with the success of our inaugural Humdinger! Children’s Book Festival last year.
“The response from kids and families was phenomenal and this encouraged us to make Humdinger! 2014 even bigger and better!
This year’s festival has many elements to it – we’re on the road with Carlo Gebler and Paul Howard in a library van, we’re exhibiting the gorgeous illustration work of Clive McFarland and Judith Kerr, we’re working with the Nerve Centre, screening beautiful movies in our after school club.
“Plus, there will be workshops, readings and signings from some of the biggest names in children’s books, including Oliver Jeffers, Tony Ross, Tony De Saulles, Ian Whybrow and many more.”
Culture, Arts and Leisure Minister Carál Ní Chuilín said: “The love of books and reading is developed at a very young age, which is why this celebration of children’s books is so important.
“The festival provides children with an opportunity to see characters from books in real life and to meet the authors and illustrators. Importantly it will also help to embed the magic of reading for life. It’s definitely an event not to be missed.”
Damian Smyth, Head of Literature, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, commented: “It is often the first stories we read that stay with us forever, firing the imagination and enticing a new generation of readers into the world of creativity and discovery.
“We are delighted to be able to support this fantastic festival, which will give local children the opportunity to meet the people responsible for bringing some of their favourite characters to life and a valuable insight into their creative process.”
Booktrust, the UK-wide charity who specialise in children’s literacy and spearhead reading campaigns, are proud partners in Humdinger! 2014.
Liz Canning, Booktrust NI said: “We are delighted to be working once again with Dog Ears on the Humdinger! Children’s Book Festival. We have an exciting programme of events with something for everyone – Rhymetime events for Sure Start groups, author and illustrator workshops for schools and families.
“At Booktrust we believe that reading can change lives and Humdinger! 2014 could be well that life-changing experience for some children.”
