A new market in Inishowen has had parents across the peninsula flocking to it in their droves.
The ‘Smart Mums’ market was set up and is run by Buncrana cousins Antoinette Doherty and Sandra Docherty.
Last week, over 300 mums and dads attended the sale in Cockhill Hall, with the sellers all reporting a strong profit.
The idea behind the market is simple, but very effective.
Each stallholder has to sell ‘gently-used,’ nearly new products which are themed towards babies or young children under the age of 10.
The ‘Smart Mums’ market also places a strong emphasis on the quality of the products sold.
It has been a huge success, with each market attracting even larger crowds than the last.
Speaking to the ‘Journal,’ Antoinette said both she and Sandra conceived the idea for the market after being introduced to the idea in the UK and Scotland, where they previously lived.
She said: “We both thought it was a great idea and when we came back home, decided we’d set one up here.
“It’s gone so, so well and we’re delighted with the response. We held the first market in November last year, another in February and our latest last week was attended by over 300 people.
“I think people recognise that the quality of all the stallholder’s products is excellent and there are items on offer that it can be sometimes difficult to get easily here in Inishowen.”
Antoinette pointed out how 5% of their sellers made up to €100 and 70% made between €100-€300.
25% of their sellers made between €300 - €500 and their top seller made €630.
The date of the next ‘Smart Mum’s’ market in Inishowen is yet to be announced.
However, a ‘Smart Mums’ market will be held in The Vale Centre, Greysteel, Co Derry on April 26th starting at 11am. All are welcome.
