Public sector workers in Inishowen, who were due to be paid yesterday, will now not receive their wages until this morning (Friday), after an issue arose with Bank of Ireland payments.
Gardai, nurses, teachers, special needs assistants, revenue staff, those working for An Post and other public sector workers in the peninsula, who are paid fortnightly, were among up to 100,000 from across the country who were affected by the glitch, which meant their salaries did not enter their accounts as scheduled.
Some private sector workers were also affected, as were former civil servants, who were left without their pensions.
Bank of Ireland apologised yesterday for the delay and said payments would be made in the evening. Accounts will then be credited in the morning.
One Inishowen teacher who spoke to the ‘Journal’ said the issue was “very inconvenient.”
“It was a real worry when I checked my account this morning and there was nothing there. There’s some relief now when we find out the problem came from the bank, but I have a number of direct debits due to be taken from the account today and tomorrow.”
