Investigations have been launched following the death of a 35-year-old man who died in hospital following an accident at a construction site in Derry.
The man, named as Philip Fenwick, was a joiner from the Castlederg area. He’s understood to have died after being transferred to Altnagelvin following an accident at the former Avondale Nursing Home site.
Planning permission had been granted in January for the construction of a new 61 bed residential nursing home for patients with dementia and was due to be completed in December.
SDLP Councillor Angela Dobbins who lives in Culmore, offered her condolences to the family of Mr Fenwick.
She said: “It is of course irrelevant that this was not a local man, his death will be a loss to his family who have our heartfelt sympathies. This certainly cast a dark shadow on this project which was very much welcomed at the time the planning application came before council and I was among those who endorsed it, knowing the fine reputation Dr Mc Donald the owner has in providing care for the elderly and dementia patients.”
A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive said: “HSENI has been made aware of a fatality following an incident on a building site in Derry last Thursday and is currently investigating. Our thoughts are with the family at this most difficult time.”
A PSNI spokesperson added: “Police are investigating the death of a 35-year-old man on a Derry construction site on behalf of the coroner. Police were informed on Friday that the man had died in hospital following an accident at Culmore Road on Thursday.”
