Sinn Féin Councillor Kevin Campbell has welcomed the publication of the Irish Language and Ulster Scots strategies by the Department of Culture Arts and Leisure.

Colr. Campbell said the publication of the report would allow for “sensible debate” about culture.

“Language is a massive part of people’s cultural identity and therefore should be treated with equality and respect.

“I welcome the fact the strategies to enhance and develop the Irish Language and Ulster Scots culture have now been published. These will allow us to begin a sensible debate in promoting culture across the North.

“Not only will it add to the educational and learning experience of those involved in the indigenous languages and culture but will allow us to amalgamate culture into enhancing the economy.

“I would encourage people to take time to read the strategies and come forward with positive suggestions in how we can all embrace difference while maintaining our own identities and traditions.”
