A 23-year-old man who knocked down and killed a keen athlete has been jailed for three years and ordered to spend a further three years on licence.
Jonathan Frances McGonigle, of Moyola Drive, pleaded guilty to causing the death of 25-year old Martin Gallagher on November 1 last year.
He also admitted two counts of dangerous driving on the Duncreggan and Buncrana Roads, driving with excess alcohol, having no insurance and failing to stop, remain at the scene or report an accident.
Mr Gallagher was returning home from Hallowe ' en celebrations when he was hit by a black Volkswagen Passat.
Derry Crown Court heard he was thrown in excess of 30 metres and died as a result of serious head injuries.
As well as the three year jail term and licence period, McGonigle was banned from driving for 10 years and ordered to pay 400 in fines
