Local Irish dancer Lara Magee was the centre of attention at a grand gala ball in the Inishowen Gateway hotel last Friday which was held to celebrate Scoil Rince McConomy Bradley’s achievements at both the national and worldwide Irish dancing championships.

Seven year old Lara, a pupil at Scoil Iosagain, Irish danced her way into first place at the National Championships held in May having only danced with the school for little over a year.

She received a rapturous reception when announced at the ball along with the other champions Cyra Taylor, Brogan McCay, Aiesha Coyle who placed first at world level and national champions Gavin Devlin and Caoimhe Devlin.

Lara’s Irish dancing school is riding the crest of a wave after achieving 3 World Champions and 6 Irish National Champions in 2013. The opulent ball was held to celebrate the success of their hardworking students and to show off their accolades. Red carpet arrivals, champagne (and fizzy drinks) reception, four course dining, an award ceremony and spectacular performances were a few of the highlights of this glamorous event.

The climax of the evening was the premiere of a specially commissioned video which highlighted each student’s success. The video which was jointly produced and filmed by iCozy Media and Buncrana’s Rainey Day Productions featured interviews with the dancers, behind the scenes recordings of their dance practice and footage from the world and national championships. It gives an insight into the competitive world of Irish dancing and how, for many young dancers, it becomes a vital aspect of their very existence. The video has since been uploaded to YouTube and has raked up over 5,000 views in four days.

Teacher Elan is overwhelmed by the success that Lara and the other pupils have achieved in such a short period of time, saying “I am so proud of all our students and any award that they win is an amazing achievement. The students deserve all the success they get because they put in blood, sweat and tears to achieve their dream.”
