The Rose of Tralee has a rival and it’s enough to send everyone in County Derry barking mad.
While the lovely Roses and our beautiful Derry Rose Eimear will be strutting their stuff on stage, their four legged friends will also be lapping up the limelight in the hope of their own title.
The ‘Nose of Tralee’ is a novel nationwide competition that will be run at the same time next month as the Rose celebration.
And gorgeous Toby, a nine year old deaf cavalier is through to the finals for County Derry and hoping to lick the opposition.
Toby was rescued by Cavaliers in Need in November last year when he was found in an awful state.
But when the Buchanan family from the Waterside saw Toby on the group’s Facebook page they knew he was the pet for them. “Despite his past Toby has the most trusting lovely small face with a cute little nose that always follows the ground,” said his owners, Muriel and Cheryl.
“He is so proud to be in County Derry’s Nose of Tralee.”
Cavaliers in Need is a small group of people who rescue, rehabilitate and rehome cavalier King Charles, mostly from puppy farms, and the majority are in a very poor state.
Around 300 King Charles Spaniels have been rescued since 2013 thanks to cavaliers in need.
They also helped in the rescue of the Carlow puppy farm dogs, that came with many illnesses.
Nose of Tralee sponsors, Petsitters Ireland are hoping to forge strong links with the actual Rose festival and hopefully Toby could be participating in this year’s gala festival parade.
32 dogs will be competing, one from every county.
But Toby needs your vote.

The Nose of Tralee competition gives pet lovers a chance to show off their pets and their love for them.
It’s also very much a community event where people can get behind the pet that they would like to represent their county.
