Greyhounds get a raw deal
Sir,
As I was browsing through Tuesday’s edition (16th Oct) of the Derry Journal I was appalled to read Norman Hamill’s light hearted approach to the issue of the drugging of greyhounds. Hamill states that “there’s a funny side when cocaine has moved so far downmarket that even the greyhounds are on it.” I think even Mr Hamill knows that these dogs aren’t taking these drugs ‘recreationally’ but that these poor animals are being cruelly doped purely for monetary gain.
It is time for the Industry to protect the welfare and lives of racing greyhounds, both during and after their careers. Greyhounds get a raw deal. In 2006 the Sunday Times exposed a mass grave of 10,000 greyhounds in Co.Durham, considered worthless after their racing career they had all been shot in the head with a bolt gun.
The recent news of eight prosecutions in Northern Ireland against greyhound racers for doping is significant and important for the future of greyhounds’ welfare.
Hugh Duffy, son of Willie Duffy, hit out at those involved and said “people giving any drugs to greyhounds are not welcome here and should stay away. They are only giving the sport a bad name.”
I would hope that Mr. Hamill will think twice next time before laughing at the expense of these cruelly treated dogs.
