Trouble at the interface
Sir, We would like to respond to your article in Tuesday's Journal (2nd February), 'Tit for Tat tension rising'.
We would like to dispute the police version that it is children causing the trouble when it is clearly adults and youths for the Wapping Lane area causing damage to property in the Abercorn Road area.
The residents from the Abercorn Road area fully support the intervention of independent neighbourhood officers but sadly we don't believe the same welcome will be extended by Fountain resident William Jackson.
We would like to agree with Mr. Jackson in relation to the trouble at the bottom of Wapping Lane and Newgate that the same group of attackers are changing tactics and switching from Wapping Lane and Newgate, as it is loyalist gangs launching attacks from both these locations.
Mr Jackson may have witnessed the incident in which two young mothers and their toddlers, exiting Riverview Park, were verbally abused by a loyalist gang painting kerbs at the bottom of Wapping Lane.
We are aware that from time to time that some cat-calling and goading does come from nationalist children but it is met with physical attacks from adults.
In conclusion, Abercorn Road residents are always willing to meet with other concerned parties in relation to these issues.
We would like to know where our elected representatives are when this trouble is occurring and why they are not meeting with local people to discuss their genuine concerns.
Yours,
Bishop Street residents
