We reject the term 'no hopers', say Republican Network for Unity

A Chara The Ex POWs and Concerned Republican grouping was initially formed to oppose the rapid slide into supporting the RUC/PSNI.

Unfortunately Provisional Sinn Fein went ahead and decided to back the British Crown Forces in the illegal occupation of our country.

Later we changed our name to the Republican Network for Unity (RNU) in order to reflect the current political realities. RNU has no private army, we do not call for a return to armed struggle and we reject the tag "no hopers" with which the DFM Martin McGuinness describes those who oppose British rule on this island. Our members have been vilified and character assassinated by the PSF leadership for expressing our opinions and choosing our own company.

The British DFM should know that we do not want British troops on our streets or barracked in our country - which they use as a handy base for 'anti-terrorist' training from which to invade and terrorise other countries, nor do we want MI5 or its agents and spies, from whichever group they are recruited, prying on our communities.

While we do not advocate armed resistance, we take a long-term historical view of British involvement in Ireland.

We note that generation after generation Irish men and women rebelled against British imperialism . . . a reality much in evidence throughout the world today. No matter who attempts to rewrite our history the fact remains that there will always be resistance to this occupation.

The RNU believes that the republican grassroots are awaking to the reality that a new DeValera (with a beard) is leading them up the wrong path.

That it has taken so long for this reality to become clear shows the profound sense of loyalty and trust the ordinary people had invested in the Provisional leadership. This sense of abused trust will increasingly serve as the yardstick to measure the depth of the betrayal that these same people are now feeling.

The RNU appeals for all ex-prisioners, activists and the broader republican community to join with us to preserve and rebuild the Republican movement and re-kindle its spirit of resistance.

Is mise,

Danny McBrearty.
