A Limavady group is appealing for volunteers to spare an hour of their time and help pack donations that will be sent to refugees stranded across Europe.
Christine Deeney and Liz Bailie Allen were horrified at the distressing scenes flashed across television screens of refugees caught up in the crisis.
“Just seeing the pictures on television and seeing how desperate people have been, I thought, selfishly, if that had of been me, I would want someone to help me,” said Christine.
The women set up ‘North West Linking Hands’ and, since their appeal over a week ago, they have been overwhelmed by the amount of clothing and equipment that have been donated.
Ms. Deeney said the generosity of the Roe Valley community has surpassed all expectations, they have “a mountain of sorting to do to get the donations ready for shipping by the end of next week”.
One lorry load of clothing, toiletries and equipment has already been sent to Derry Refugee Aid, and Christine there are several lorry loads left to sort.
“We desperately need more people to help us sort the amazing donations,” said Christine.
“Anyone over 16 who can spare even an hour to help this week, we would love to hear from you,” said Christine.
“Youth groups, sports groups, Church groups, individuals, anyone from anywhere - please come and give a hand!
“I don’t need to tell you what a good cause you will be helping and how gratefully your help will be received, both by the Linking Hands Group and by refugee families you will never meet.
‘North West Linking Hands’ is located in Unit 1 at Roe Valley Enterprises in Aghanloo, Limavady.
