Members of the Derry branch of the National Union of Journalists are to meet in Guildhall Square to show solidarity with the Al Jazeera reporters imprisoned by the Egyptian government.

The event on Thursday afternoon will be one in a number of protests world-wide called for by the International Federation of Journalists.

NUJ general secretary Michelle Stanistreet: “The eight who have been jailed are journalists - not terrorists, not criminals. They have been jailed for doing their jobs.

“The freedom of journalists is absolutely essential in every society.”

Eamonn McCann, Northern Ireland representative on the NUJ National Executive said: “The intention is to be able to produce hundreds of photographs and videos of protests around the world, to be distributed by the International Federation, to encourage governments to take action and show the Egyptian authorities that this outrageous attack on our colleagues and on free speech isn’t acceptable.”

The NUJ Guildhall Square gathering will be at 5pm.
