Christmas is traditionally a time for romance - and local man Kevin McBride decided to make this festive season very special for his partner, staff nurse Annemarie Nicholas, with a marriage proposal on Christmas Eve.
But keen to make this a proposal to remember, the love-struck Derry man enlisted the help of the staff of LegenDerry on Ice, family, friends, and a host of photographers in popping the question on the ice as the sun set on Christmas Eve.
Sylviya Marinova from LegenDerry on Ice said it was “brilliant” to be involved in the surprise proposal on Tuesday evening.
“It was very emotional. Annemarie was very surprised - I don’t think she knew where to look as so many people were taking pictures. She was very nervous - I’d say she was in shock for the first five minutes but she was so happy.”
All the staff at LegenDerry on Ice, which has been operating at Ebrington Square through the festive season, helped to keep Kevin’s secret until they skated onto the ice with a huge banner asking the big question.
“We played Aerosmith’s ‘Don’t Want to Miss a Thing’ and Van Morrison ‘Have I Told You Lately’,” Sylviya said.
Photographers, including those from the local media, were on hand to capture the moment. The couple, who recently became parents to a baby girl, are now planning their wedding.
