A 42 year-old Derry man was given a suspended sentence after he admitted assaulting police officers in the Galliagh area of the city.
James Michael McGinley, of 13a Fern Park, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault on police officers and disorderly behaviour when he appeared at Derry Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said his client “largely abstains from alcohol” but had been at a birthday party prior to the incident and had taken too much to drink.
District Judge Barney McElholm sentenced him to four months imprisonment to run concurrently on each charge and suspended the sentence for three years. He also ordered the 42 year-old to pay £100 compensation to each of the police officers.
