A 20-year-old man from Limavady who robbed his local shop with a plastic bag over his face has received a jail term.
Kevin Clarence, of Glenview Drive, pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary with intent to steal on January 6, last year.
CCTV of the incident was played to Derry Crown Court and it was revealed the 20-year-old had targeted the same shop before. The court was told Clarence went in to Spar in Coolessan Walk with a plastic bag over his head.
He was also carrying a kitchen knife but was recognised by staff who told him to “get out Kevin”.
The court was told the shop assistants were “upset and distressed.”
Imposing a determinate sentence of three years and four months, Judge Philip Babington said small shops are the “lifeblood of many communities” and their staff “must be protected”. Clarence will serve 14 months of his sentence in custody with the remainder spent on licence.
He was also banned from going within 50m of the shop for the next five years.
