A teenager who was found with a knife hidden in his sock has been jailed for five months.
Marc Villa, of Earhart Park, pleaded guilty to possessing the knife and resisting police on August 14.
Derry Magistrates Court heard police stopped the 19-year-old as he was cycling along the Glendermott Road in the early hours of the morning.
Officers went to search him and Villa produced the knife from his sock and gave it to them.
He was arrested and as police took him to their car he became abusive and refused to get in.
During interview the teenager claimed he was going to the Waterside to buy some cannabis and took the knife for his own protection.
It was revealed to the court Villa was in breach of a suspended sentence.
Defence counsel Eoghan Devlin said the 19-year-old has been on remand for the last two weeks and has been using that time to address his issues.
