A man who assaulted his girlfriend has been jailed for nine months.
James Anthony Edward Moore, Glendara, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, disorderly behaviour and making a threat to kill.
He admitted further charges of disorderly behaviour and resisting police on July 9.
Derry Magistrate’s Court heard the 21-year-old was having a row with the woman and smashed a glass against a door. She was injured as a result. The court was told Moore also made threats against her. When police arrived Moore resisted arrest and struggled violently with officers.
Defence counsel Nicola Coulter told the court her client was ‘unable to control his anger when he consumes alcohol’.
Jailing Moore, District Judge Barney McElholm said it was a ‘disgracefull assault on a defenceless young woman’. He also ordered the 21-year-old to spend two years on probation and imposed a restraining order.
