Although statistics are continuing to rise Lifeline (Inishowen) Domestic Violence Service is continuing to struggle to keep the services available for the women and children who are experiencing or have experienced domestic abuse in Inishowen.
According to co-ordinator, Mary Doherty, these services are crucial in the rural area to ensure women and children are not further isolated and further exposed to continued abuse.
Ms Doherty said: SAFE Ireland (National Network) statistics have shown that 1 in 5 women are experiencing domestic abuse .
“We acknowledge the great work Donegal Domestic Violence Service do throughout Donegal and the pressure that is being put on them by the HSE to provide the services to such a large county.
“As Inishowen is as large as County Louth and has a population bigger that Co Leitrim we have learned, from the women and children, over the past 17yrs of the great need for a local based service in Inishowen.
She concluded: The support allows families to move on to a’ better place’. We feel it is time that we as a community stood up and demanded these services.
