A Derry drugs worker has said there is a sense of fear in the city over contaminated drugs that have been linked to a number of deaths across the North.

Several people have died from taking ecstasy tablets called ‘yellow rolex’ in Belfast in recent weeks.

Martin Connolly, a member of the Derry Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) and community anti-drugs activist, said it is likely similar drugs could be in the city.

Speaking to the ‘Journal’ last night he said: “I would not be surprised if the drugs are here in the city.”

“The fear factor is there, particularly among parents who may know their young people are dabbling in drugs. It may be that we have just been lucky so far,” he added.

Warning people to be extra mindful of the dangers, Mr Connolly said: “People talk about a bad batch but the reality with any drugs is that you can never be sure what they are made up of, and even if a substance is not contaminated it can still kill.”
