The former St Peter’s High School building in Creggan will be demolished at the start of the New Year, Sinn Féin councillor Kevin Campbell has said.
The former mayor was speaking after a meeting with representatives from the Derry diocese.
“Over recent months I have been in discussions with various bodies in relation to the demolition of the former St Peter’s School at Southway. It became very clear there were a number of issues around the demolition and clearing of the site that had to be resolved.
“In October I received notice that the tendering process for the demolition of the site was to begin. Following discussions with Diocesan spokesperson for the Catholic Church in Derry, I am pleased to announce that the tendering process will be concluded this week and that the demolition of the old school will begin at the start of January once the holidays are over. It has been a long process involving a lot of agencies and I would like to thank everyone involved,” he said.
