A new book promoting healthy eating for children written by a Derry nurse will be launched in the Central Library today.

‘Picnic in the Park with Sally and Sam’ by Margaret Cunningham is designed for parents and children and encourages children to eat healthily and exercise.

It contains activities and games for children and recipes and advice for parents on food groups and nutrition.

It tells the story of a group of young friends planning a picnic in the park and deciding what food to bring along. In doing so they learn which foods are healthy and about the benefits of exercise.

Ms Cunningham said she wanted the book to be child friendly in order to promote the message of a healthy lifestyle from an early age.

The book features pictures of dolls, shot at a number of locations around Derry, to illustrate the healthy eating message.

In her forward to the story, Ms Cunningham writes: “The focus is positive messages of healthy eating and exercise.

“The characters, Sally, Sam and their friends help illustrate healthy messages to children at an age when research shows they are most receptive.

“Real change occurs when everyone is motivated.

“As a parent is the most influential person in a child’s life, example can be set by attitude and behaviour towards healthy eating and exercise.

“Learn about this at an early age and reap the benefits for a lifetime.”

Ms Cunningham said the book has been funded by The Cosy Club and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive and will be available at a number of locations throughout the city.

It will be launched in the Central Library, Foyle Street, this morning at 10.30 and copies will be available for the public.

Copies of the book are free but if anyone wishes to make a donation the money will go to cancer charities, Macmillan and the Pink Panthers.
