There are strong indications dissident republicans were behind this morning’s murder in Derry, an MLA has said.
DUP MLA William Hay, speaking to the ‘Derry Journal’ from the scene said: “If you look at the pattern of events, the shooting in Belfast last night and the shooting here this morning, I think it all adds up.”
Mr. Hay appealed for any members of the public with information on those behind the killing to come forward.
He said: “These people have to be caught and brought before the courts.”
Meanwhile it’s also been revealed that Unity of Purpose, politicians, local business owners, and city centre stakeholders are to have a vigil at Shipquay Street tomorrow morning at 11 a.m., stating that this action is ‘not in the name’ of our city.
The victim has been named locally as 36-year-old Barry McCrory, originally from Moss Park in the Galliagh area of the city. He was shot dead in an upstairs flat at Shipquay Street in the heart of the city centre at around 11am.
There were emotional scenes this morning as relatives of the murdered man arrived at the scene.
A woman who was in the building when the shooting was carried out, was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment.
