The Voice star Rachael O’Connor said she knew right away that she would pick Kylie Minogue as her coach.

The 16-year old Limavady Grammar pupil wowed the judges on Saturday night with her rendition of Emeli Sande’s ‘Clown’.

“I remember walking onto the stage, and it was so quiet,” Rachel said.

“I thought to myself, ’What if no one claps? What if no one cheers?’ And then I remember singing the first line and hearing the crowd scream, and I thought, ’Wow! This is crazy!’ As soon as I saw Kylie turn, I couldn’t believe it and I knew right away I’d pick her as my coach.”

She was encouraged to enter ‘The Voice UK’ by her GCSE Music teacher at the Grammar, Dr Derek Collins.

“I never really thought that much about entering a show like this – but when I got the opportunity, I just thought why not? I never dreamed I’d actually get through,” she said.

‘I’d actually like to thank Dr Collins for persuading me to audition. The school has been very supportive throughout all of this – in fact, everyone has been just great.’

Vice-Principal of Limavady Grammar School Kaye Henry said: “Rachael is the third and youngest member of a very talented family to attend Limavady Grammar School. The whole school and local community are behind her and wish her well on ‘The Voice UK’”.
