A large number of Community Welfare Service clinics are set to close throughout Inishowen. Muff is to close within a week while Malin and Clonmany are already closed.
That’s according to Inishowen councillor Rena Donaghey who claims the Government says people in these areas will now be facilitated by travelling to other clinics.
It is understood eleven others areas are facing imminent closure throughout Donegal.
Buncrana Councillor Donaghey says this is ‘totally unacceptable’.
She commented: “The Government say it’s because they are rebalancing resources where a full range of services will be available in one location.
“That will make life much easier and simpler for Government but it will mean the most needy will have to travel much further now to avail necessary services.”
She pointed out: “People in Muff will have to come to Buncrana or Carn while people in Malin Head and Greencastle will have to travel to Carn or Moville.
“We are talking about mothers with maybe 3/4 children many with no car and most areas do not have public transport at the clinic times.
“In winter time with frost and snow people just won’t be able to make the journey.
“It is again eroding services from rural areas like the Garda Stations, the rural post offices now Community Welfare Services.
She said this should not be allowed to happen.
