Mental health units given green light

New independent living units for people living with mental health problems in Derry has been given the go ahead.

Stormont Environment Minister Mark H Durkan has recommended planning approval for 16 independent living units at Gransha.

He said the new units will accommodate patients currently living in an institutional setting at Gransha.

““My vision is for the DOE to build a better environment and help provide much needed local services to help some of the most vulnerable in our society. This decision will help do that,” he said.

His Executive colleague, Health Minister Edwin Poots, backed the planning approval.

“The proposed development will provide an opportunity for patients with mental health problems to live more independently whilst benefiting from the continued care of specialist healthcare professionals based at the hospital.

“The site is located within the existing Gransha grounds and will specifically provide individual supported units of accommodation for patients currently living in an institutional setting in the Gransha complex,” he said.
